And disappearances. This musical thriller at the Almeida based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis is directed by Rupert Goold who becomes the theatre’s new artistic director in January 2014. American Psycho is produced in collaboration with his Headlong theatre company which Goold leaves in August 2013 after eight years as artistic director to take up the reigns at the 325-seat Islington theatre, succeeding Michael Attenborough.

After Jonathan Kent took over in 1990, it had 14 West End transfers in 12 years, and early booking for tickets became essential – by the time the reviews came out, the run was usually sold out.
