Discussion: “Living with a New Identity – The Question of Gender”

Marking the new fiscal year 2013-2014, The Japan Foundation, Jakarta with Lontar Foundation are preparing an enlightening and thought-provoking event!

We delightly inform you, the following:
The Third Discussion of the Series of Discussion Forums Inspired by Indonesian Literature

Have you ever felt uncomfortable with your own gender? Have you had any questions why do we picture girl with long hair and skirts but boy with short hair and short pants? What happens if you feel uneasy to be fit in this picture?

Gender could be seen as identity that will define and perceive people and their relations with society, including the third gender or the marginalized gender.

In this discussion, we will have a very rare and interesting opportunity of hearing stories of courageous people who happened to have issues in gender and how they dealt with societies. Their unique stories will include not only sorrow and despair but also hope and joy. The stories discover how societies see you based on your gender and judge you on your femininity and masculinity. The discussion will also be enriched with a side story from an honest mother who accepted her beloved child’s gender issue despite of any norms in society.

At the end, are we brave enough to declare who we are?

Lontar Foundation and the Japan Foundation proudly co-host the events. Both Indonesia and Japan being non-western states share similar questions mentioned above concerning identity issues, during the time of modernization.
