Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina’s student-run radio station will be kicking off its Fall 2010 “Hellraiser Week” fundraiser and Halloween weekend with a zombie walk to Five Points. The zombie walk is a public parade of people dressed in zombie costumes, lurching and groaning their way from USC to Five Points.
The zombie walk takes place on Oct. 29. Zombies will start gathering on the Russell House Patio around 4 p.m. The pre-walk festivities will feature music provided by WUSC’s own DJ D, face painting, fake blood for walkers to decorate themselves with and free food from local vendors. Departure is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Zombies will parade down Greene Street to Bey’s in Five Points for a “Monster Mash,” featuring local and semi-local acts Jefferson Vimana, Magic Missile, Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun, the Get Wets, and a DJ set by Blake Arambula. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 7:15 p.m. The cost is $5 for 18-20 year-olds.
The Columbia Police Department will provide escort and safety services for the event, and traffic will be blocked on Greene Street from the Russell House to Five Points.
The radio station’s fall fundraiser starts Oct. 30 and goes through Nov. 6. Donors can call the station from noon to midnight at 803.576.9872 or donate online at any time at www.wusc.sc.edu. “Hellraiser” week features a different music genre each day, starting with rock on Saturday and Sunday and moving to electronica, Afro-genres, world, Americana and hip-hop.
“We wanted to do something unique that would get people excited about and interested in WUSC,” said Cait Costello, WUSC station manager. “Kicking off our semi-annual fundraiser with a zombie walk on Halloween weekend is a great example of our deejay’s creativity, and will hopefully encourage people to donate to the station so that we can keep bringing original programming to our listeners.”Donations will help the station start a second HD web stream, meet yearly budget requirements and throw bigger and better events and shows. Donors receive S.W.A.G., including a newly designed T-shirt, “Hellraiser Week” hoodie, messenger bag, pizza cutter or pen, depending on the amount given.
